Your Book Pro Book Coach

Book Coach for memoir, autobiography and biography

This route of Your Book Pro's Book Coach helps you turn remembered life into a book with a spine. It asks one question at a time, in plain English, until the shape of a life story becomes visible: whose story it is, which slice of time carries it, what changed, and which scene you could record first. It is free to talk to and you do not need an account.

Talk to the Book Coach about memoir

Who this suits

  • People who have been told all their lives that they should write it down
  • Anyone holding a family story, a set of letters or a parent's papers
  • Writers who have started a memoir three times and stalled in chronology
  • Biographers working from someone else's notebooks, diaries or recordings

What it can help you uncover

  • Which period, relationship or question actually holds the book together
  • The change at the centre of it, whether that change is in you, in someone else or in how the past is now understood
  • Who you are really writing for: family, people like you, the general reader or a publisher
  • The material that still has heat in it and should be recorded before it fades
  • One vivid scene you can dictate today instead of starting at birth

What you get

  • A conversation that follows what you actually say rather than a fixed form
  • Two or three directions worth trying, each with what already looks promising, what is still open, and a small first experiment
  • A starter brief with a working title and a provisional running order
  • The option, only if you want it, to turn that brief into a working plan in Your Book Pro

What it does not do

  • It does not write your book for you, and it does not produce prose in your voice during the conversation.
  • It does not decide that your idea is good or bad, and it never scores you.
  • It does not promise publication, sales, an agent or a deal.
  • It does not need an account to talk to, and it does not publish anything you say.

Guidance for memoir, autobiography and biography

A life is not a spine

The most common memoir problem is not a lack of material. It is that everything is included and nothing is chosen. A memoir usually works when one thread runs the length of it: a period, a relationship, a journey or an unanswered question. Everything else earns its place by serving that thread. The coach keeps returning to this because it is the decision that makes the rest of the book possible.

Find the before and after

Readers follow a life story because something is different at the end. That change can be quiet. A person stops waiting for an apology. A daughter understands a decision made before she was born. If you cannot yet name the change, the coach will keep circling it rather than moving on, because a memoir without one tends to read as a list of events.

Know who is on the other side of the page

A book written for grandchildren and a book written for the general reader are different books, and neither is a lesser choice. Private family memoirs are a completely legitimate outcome. Deciding this early changes how much context you explain, how much you protect other people, and what you do at the end.

Start with a scene, not a chapter one

Chronology is a trap for dictation. Beginning with a single vivid moment, a kitchen table, a hospital corridor, a phone call taken standing up, gives your voice something concrete to describe. Your Book Pro is built so you can record that scene first and put it in order later.

Other people are in your memoir

Living relatives, colleagues and former partners appear in almost every life story. The coach will raise this if your material points at it, not to frighten you off, but because knowing early who is in the book affects what you record and how you handle it later.

Questions people ask

What is the Book Coach for memoir?
It is a free conversation on Your Book Pro that helps you work out what your memoir actually is before you write it. It asks one question at a time and, once enough has emerged, offers two or three concrete directions you could take, each with a small first step.
Do I need an account to use it?
No. You can have the whole conversation without signing up. You are only asked to create a free account if you choose to turn the resulting brief into a working plan in your workspace.
Does it cost anything?
Book Coach conversations are free. Paid Your Book Pro features such as editorial feedback and export are separate, and the coach will not charge you for talking.
I have no idea where to start. Is that a problem?
No. The memoir route opens by asking which person, period or moment keeps coming back to you, which is a memory question rather than a structure question. Structure comes later and comes out of your answers.
What is the difference between memoir, autobiography and biography here?
The coach treats them as one family because the underlying questions are the same: whose story, what slice of time, what changed, and who it is for. An autobiography usually covers a whole life, a memoir takes a slice of it, and a biography tells someone else's. The coach follows whichever your answers point to.
Can I use it for a book about a parent or grandparent?
Yes. Many people arrive with a relative's notebooks, letters or recordings. The coach will usually help you notice whether the book is their story or your search for it, which are different books.
How long does a conversation take?
Most people reach directions worth trying in about five to eight exchanges, roughly ten minutes. You can stop at any point and come back.
Will it write my memoir for me?
No. It does not generate prose in your voice during the conversation, and it is not trying to. The point is to get you to a first scene you can record yourself.
What happens to what I tell it?
The conversation is stored privately so you can return to it, and it is not published anywhere. If you do not create an account, it is deleted after 90 days. If you choose to start a working plan, the brief is saved to your own account.
Can I dictate my memoir rather than type it?
Yes, that is what Your Book Pro is built for. You can talk your memoir out loud, have it transcribed, and shape it into chapters afterwards. You can also talk to the coach itself using the microphone.
What if my life story is not dramatic enough?
Interest comes from specificity and change, not from spectacle. The coach pushes for the concrete detail and the shift in understanding, which is where ordinary lives become readable.
What if I change my mind about the direction?
The directions are described as starting points to test, not as the definitive book. Nothing is locked, and you can run the conversation again with a different idea.
