Pay for the book, not the month.

We are changing how Your Book Pro is paid for, because books are not written to a billing cycle. Here is exactly what changes, and what it will cost you.

Almost every author we have met writes in bursts. A fortnight where the thing pours out of you, then a month of nothing while life happens. A long quiet spell, and then a weekend where you finally understand what chapter nine was always meant to be.

A monthly subscription does not fit that shape at all. It asks you to pay in the quiet months for the privilege of not writing, and it quietly punishes you for taking your time — which, if you are writing something worth reading, you probably should.

So we are introducing a second way to pay, and moving everyone who joins from today onto it. It is called Plus, and it works on credits.

Start with a thousand free credits, and no card

When you join, a thousand free credits land in your account as a joining bonus, awarded the moment you verify your email address. You do not need to enter a card, you are not signing up to anything that renews, and the credits never expire.

A thousand credits is enough to bring your manuscript in, get First Impressions on your opening — free, as long as your balance is a thousand or more — and have a proper Editorial Feedback pass on the whole book. That is the read that tells you whether the thing holds together, where the pace sags, and what a reader will actually feel. For most authors it is the moment the fog clears.

Bring in a Scrivener project and you will earn a thousand more. We would rather reward you for arriving with real work than charge you for the privilege of uploading it — and bringing your book back out again, in Scrivener's own format, is free for ever.

What a credit is worth

A credit is about a penny. It is not a token or a mysterious unit of processing — it is priced against the thing you actually get. Below are the prices for a book of up to 100,000 words; longer manuscripts scale from there, with nothing jumping at a threshold.

Top up whenever you need to: a thousand credits for £10, three and a half thousand for £29, ten thousand for £65, twenty-five thousand for £125. No credit ever expires — not the ones you buy, not the ones we give you, not the ones you earn. If you disappear for eight months and come back to chapter nine, they will be sitting there waiting.

You will always see the exact cost before anything runs, and we only take the credits once you have the result in your hands. If a job fails, it costs you nothing. That is not a goodwill gesture — it is how the system is built.

Your words are yours. Always.

This is the part we want to be unambiguous about, because it is the thing that would worry us in your position.

Credits never buy access to your own book. They buy an editor's opinion, or a finished file. Nothing else.

Your manuscript stays in your account whether you have ten thousand credits or none. You can keep writing, keep dictating, keep editing, keep talking to your Book Coach, and download every word you have written at any point — including long after you have stopped paying us anything at all. There is no version of this where your book is held behind a paywall.

One honest exception, so it is not a surprise later: the first time you produce a finished, typeset file — a publisher-ready PDF or a styled DOCX — we ask that you have bought credits at least once. £10 covers it. Your own words, in plain form, remain free to download for ever, on every plan, whether you have ever paid us or not.

If you would rather not think about it

Some authors hate a meter. We understand that entirely, and Pro is unchanged for exactly this reason.

At £99 for the year, Annual Pro makes the editorial work unlimited — Editorial Feedback, Detailed Editorial, First Impressions, Ask the Editor, your Book Coach, whole-book proof reading, footprint and source checks, publishing and marketing advice, and your exports. No credits, no counting, no deciding whether this draft is worth spending on. It comes with three books in your library, ten audio uploads totalling ten hours, two Beta Readers per book and as many cover concepts as you like — and if you want more of any of those you can top up with credits without leaving the plan.

What this means if you are already with us

• If you are on Pro, nothing changes. Your plan continues exactly as it is, at the price you signed up at, with everything it already includes. That goes for gifted and founding accounts too.
• If you were on Basic, you are now on Plus — with a thousand credits, so you can finally try the tools that used to sit behind the upgrade wall.
• If you are in a trial, it runs its full course. Nothing is cut short. When it ends you move to Plus and keep writing, or take Annual Pro if the tools have earned it.

Anything we have already promised, we will honour — podcaster offers, Scrivener offers, founding author pricing, all of it.

Annual subscribers can buy credits too, for a fourth book or an eleventh audio upload. You will never be stopped mid-sentence and asked for money.

Why we think this is fairer

The honest reason is that the old model asked the wrong question. It asked how many months you would like to be a customer for. The question that matters is how many books you want to write.

Under Plus you pay for a finished book roughly once, and only when you are actually working on it. If it takes you a year, that is your business. If you write three, Pro will be cheaper and we will tell you so. And if you decide the whole thing is not for you, you take your manuscript and go, without having paid for a single month you did not use.

We would rather be paid for the book we helped you finish than for the months you were too busy to open the app.
