How to hire a ghostwriter without regretting it
Find candidates through The Ghostwriters Agency, the CIEP directory or referrals; shortlist three; pay each a fee for a sample chapter from the same interview; stage payments against approved milestones; and get the copyright assignment in writing before you pay anything beyond the deposit.
What a fair ghostwriting contract says
If any of these are missing, ask for them before the deposit. All are normal requests and a professional will have seen them all before.
- Total fee, and exactly what it includes — how many interview hours, how many revision rounds.
- Payment staged against approved milestones, not against dates.
- A named deliverable for each stage: outline, sample chapter, first draft, revised draft.
- Express assignment of copyright to you, effective on final payment.
- What happens if you stop after stage one, two or three — and what you keep.
- Whether the ghostwriter may name you as a client, and in what form.
- Confidentiality, covering the material as well as the arrangement.
- Who owns the recordings and transcripts of your interviews.
- A defined revision scope — 'two rounds of revisions to the full draft', not 'until you are happy'.
- What happens if the writer becomes unavailable — and whether the material returns to you.
- Whether AI tools may be used in drafting, and what must be disclosed to you.

Where to look
The Ghostwriters Agency and similar UK agencies — vetted, more expensive, and they handle the matching, which is worth something if you have never done this.
The CIEP directory — many editors ghostwrite, particularly for memoir and business books, and their rates tend to be more transparent.
Referrals. Ask an author whose ghostwritten book you admire. The acknowledgements often name them, and a referral moves you up the queue.
Marketplaces. Reedsy and others list ghostwriters with credits. Vetting is real but variable at the lower price bands.
Avoid: anyone quoting a fixed price before hearing what the book is; anyone who will not do a paid sample; and any offer of a full-length book for under about £8,000, which almost always means an outsourced draft that will need an editor you will also pay for.
The paid sample chapter is the whole selection process
Shortlist three. Record one hour of interview with each — or, better, record one hour once and give the same recording to all three. Pay each of them £250–£500 to write the same chapter from it.
Then compare. Not credentials, not their published list: voice. Which one sounds like you on a good day? That is the only question, and it cannot be answered from a portfolio, because their other books sound like their other clients.
£1,500 spent on three sample chapters is the best money in this whole process. It is roughly five per cent of the fee and it is the only real test.
Stage the payments against approvals
A normal structure: 25% on signature, 25% on approved outline and sample chapter, 25% on delivery of the full first draft, 25% on approved final draft.
The important word is approved. Payments tied to dates rather than approvals mean you pay for a draft you have not accepted. And each stage should be a genuine exit point — if the voice is wrong at chapter one, that is the moment to stop, and the contract should say what you keep if you do.
Your job during the process
Ghostwriting fails more often from client under-availability than from writer failure.
You owe them: the interview hours, on time; every scrap of existing material — notes, talks, emails, half-drafts, the folder you have been adding to for nine years; fast, specific feedback on the sample chapter; and a decision-maker who is you, not a committee.
Feedback that says 'it doesn't sound like me' is useless. Feedback that says 'I would never say utilise, and I'd have told that story about my father in one line, not a page' is what a ghostwriter can actually work with.

- How long does ghostwriting take?
- Six to twelve months for a full-length book. Anyone promising eight weeks is either outsourcing or writing something short, and you should ask which.
- Should I sign an NDA with a ghostwriter?
- Mutual confidentiality is normal and reasonable, especially for business and memoir. It should cover the material and the arrangement, and should not prevent you taking the contract to a solicitor.
- Can I hire a ghostwriter for part of a book?
- Yes, and it is often the better deal — a ghostwriter to structure and write the difficult third of a draft you have already started costs a fraction of a full commission.
- What if I already have 40,000 words?
- Say so upfront and ask for a rewriting quote rather than a ghostwriting one. It is a different job at a different price, and an honest ghostwriter will tell you whether the existing draft helps or hinders.
- Do ghostwriters use AI now?
- Some do, to varying degrees, and few volunteer it. Ask directly and put the answer in the contract. It is a fair question and the honest ones will not mind it.
